The Traditional Dancers of Santa Cruz is
a non-profit, public benefit association that
has produced twice-monthly contra dances locally since January of 2000,
taking over from the
Santa Cruz Monterey Country Dancers, which had been doing it
since 1982.
Our quarterly board
meetings are open to the public and our financial reports are available
on the internal page.
The current Governing Board, elected by the previous board at the
annual organizational meeting of January 15, 2009, is comprised of:
My interest in contra dancing began about a year or two ago and has only
grown since. I used to do Polish folk dancing for many years growing up so I
took an immediate liking to the contra dance style. Also, I've been playing
fiddle for several years so dancing has gotten me more excited about my
playing as well. I'm excited to serve on the board now, as I have a bit of
experience serving as board president of a couple orchestras I used to play
in a few years ago. I look forward to being more involved in the world of
Santa Cruz contra dancing.
I've participated in dancing and dance communities for about 40 years,
including folk dancing, country-western two-step and country swing, and a
little West Coast swing. But my favorite dance-form, and my primary dance
community for the past 25 years, has been contra-dancing. I bring to the
board more than 25 years of experience not only as a dancer, but also as a
financial manager for a variety of small and large non-profit organizations. I
am pleased to have the opportunity to serve as Treasurer for TDSC, and look
forward to an exciting and productive term on the TDSC Board.
Though I tried it briefly in 1992 at the Portuguese hall and again in 2002, I didn't start contra dancing regularly until 2004, attending most dances in Aromas, Monterey and Santa Cruz as part of my practice and mission to cultivate joy. I was first elected to the board in May of 2006 and elected Treasurer in January 2007. Soon thereafter I also took on the roles of primary publicist, website manager, membership manager, and in 2008, primary manager for the first-Friday dances. In 2009 I was elected President. I bring to the Board many governance skills acquired from over six years of serving on the Live Oak School Board. I am committed to fiscal policies that compensate talent generously while consistently re-building the organization's contingency reserves. I also work to improve, through frequent evaluations and surveys, the subjective experience of satisfaction of dancers as well as that of the talented individuals who provide music, dance direction and sound engineering, I am striving to increase awareness of and interest in contra dancing in the Santa Cruz region, with the intention of eventually sponsoring one event each week of the year.
